The method
Before using the result
- Convert each fuel quantity to energy before entry. This calculates site EUI, not source EUI, weather-normalised performance or an ENERGY STAR score.
Worked examples
These original training examples illustrate the method for IFMA Sustainability Facility Professional (SFP). Use the matching “Load example” button above to explore a variation; example values are not equipment settings or prescribed criteria.
1. Worked example
Combine annual delivered fuel energy on a common basis before dividing by gross floor area. Explain the difference between site EUI and a source-energy or weather-normalised benchmark.
- Gross floor area
- 1,000 m²
Supplied annual site-delivered energy
| Fuel | Delivered energy (kWh) |
|---|---|
| Electricity | 100,000 |
| Gas | 50,000 |
- Total delivered energy = 150000 kWh/year.
- EUI = 150000 / 1000 kWh/m²·year.
- Annual site energy: 540,000,000,000 J
- Site EUI: 150 kWh/m²·year
- Site EUI: 47.54975 kBtu/ft²·year
2. Comparison example
Compare a different supplied condition using the same method. For Facility Cert Exam, the important check is that the input meaning, units and method assumptions still match the problem.
- Gross floor area
- 1,500 m²
Supplied annual site-delivered energy
| Fuel | Delivered energy (kWh) |
|---|---|
| Electricity | 100,000 |
| Gas | 50,000 |
- Total delivered energy = 150000 kWh/year.
- EUI = 150000 / 1500 kWh/m²·year.
- Annual site energy: 540,000,000,000 J
- Site EUI: 100 kWh/m²·year
- Site EUI: 31.69983 kBtu/ft²·year
Check your understanding
1. Which relationship is used?
Site EUI = total annual site-delivered energy / gross floor area.
2. Which assumption should you check first?
Convert each fuel quantity to energy before entry. This calculates site EUI, not source EUI, weather-normalised performance or an ENERGY STAR score.
3. How should you verify a different unit system?
Convert every input to the displayed calculation units first. Equivalent physical inputs must give equivalent results; a unit label alone does not convert a number.
